Acupuncture - The Five Elements of Chinese Medicine and You

In traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, there are many different theoretical models that are important. Providing a detailed understanding of the world and the human body is the concept of five stages or five elements. This model is taught in most acupuncture schools and is sometimes used only by acupuncturists who are proficient in acupuncture and five-line styles. The theory holds that by using the five-element theory, practitioners can diagnose patients' conditions and use acupoints to adjust for imbalances between elements to treat health problems.

The five elements involved in the model are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element has its own characteristics. Although people are rarely just a specific element, it is often possible for one element to stand out from the rest. Specific factors that can control an individual's personality can also provide clues to areas where health problems may arise. So what are the characteristics of each element? How do these elements fit into human personality?

Wood: from

Wood elements are associated with growth and spring. Its corresponding direction is the East. The corresponding colors and emotions are green and angry. The organs associated with wood are the liver and gallbladder. Those wood types tend to seek challenges, like sports, adventure and stress situations, and seek to be the best, no matter what they think. Problems that may plague the Wood type include irritability, impulsive or indulgence, headache, muscle cramps and high blood pressure. A good balance has been found in maintaining flexibility and the ability to adjust its intensity levels.

Fire: from

The elements of fire are related to warmth, prosperity and summer. Its corresponding direction is the south. The corresponding colors and emotions are red and joy. Fire related organs include the heart, pericardium, small intestine and triple warmers. Those of the type of fire like to be excited and play, and find themselves mentally instinctive, understanding and energetic. Problems that may affect the type of fire include anxiety, emotional agitation, fatigue, insomnia, palpitations and rashes. The type of fire should seek to protect the body's mental, physical and emotional resources while maintaining its vitality.

Earth: from

Earth elements are related to the cycle of change between balance and season. Its corresponding direction is the center of balance. The corresponding colors and emotions are orange and contemplative or worried. The organs associated with the earth are the spleen and stomach. Earth types seek to participate and need. They relished the opportunity to be responsible behind the scenes and insist on maintaining harmony and adaptation in all aspects of life. Earth types may be subject to fear or self-doubt, and when their expectations are not met, they tend to be overprotective and disappointing. Physical symptoms may include fatigue, indigestion, and muscle tenderness that persists for unknown reasons. Earth types take time to separate themselves from their relationships and develop self-reliance.

metal: from

Metal elements are associated with decay and the beginning of autumn. Its corresponding direction is the West. The colors and emotions associated with metal are white and sad. The metal-related organs are the lungs and the large intestine. Metal types respect reason and principles and expect others to be disciplined and adhere to high standards. Issues that may affect the Metal type include insignificance and separation, as well as being too formal and rigorous. Dry skin, difficulty breathing, joint stiffness and poor blood circulation often affect metal types. Metal types are good at incorporating more spontaneity, passion and social activity into their lives.

Water: from

Water elements involve introversion and winter. Its corresponding direction is the north. The colors and emotions associated with water are black and fear. The organs associated with water are the kidneys and bladder. The type of water is a mystery, clever, introspective and self-reliant. They are very interested in knowledge and understanding. Water types may find themselves isolated and lonely, as well as chills, back pain, loss of libido, and decreased vision or hearing.

To understand how Qi flows through these elements, it's best to imagine a pentagon. Move in a circular way from wood through fire, earth, metal and water elements. In addition to the circular motion of energy through them, the elements are related to the elements on the other side of the pentagon. In this way, each element is connected to the other four elements in some way and may be negatively affected during excess or deficiency. This is why it is sometimes difficult to really determine which element you might classify as an element.

Although the above information is very basic, please take a moment to see how you relate to the five elements. One very important thing to remember is that no one is a specific element. Depending on how the elements interact, you can include aspects of multiple elements in your personality or health. This is in full compliance with the concept that the body is made up of multiple systems that interact with each other in everyday life.
