The term seems to be a dirty word. In fact, jargon is just the language that professionals use to discuss their profession. For acupuncturists, qi is jargon. Unfortunately, too many acupuncturists try to train their patients and potential patients to learn their jargon.
Acupuncturists can easily think that there is no other way to communicate their medications. That's right. The mistake is to think that patients and potential patients need the same level of information as another doctor. Doctors tend to talk to patients. Instead of teaching them what they think is a doctor's term, they use the most familiar and simple language. This may irritate patients with a higher level of understanding. However, this is a great way to teach people who are not familiar with the terminology.
If the acupuncturist needs to learn and understand anything, then how to communicate with the patient without using jargon. Many practitioners only use the word energy instead of gas, and then start from there. Unfortunately, this can also disappoint patients. The use of terms like energy still requires the patient to walk into the world and the acupuncturist's paradigm. Many of them are not ready yet.
It is important to find words that describe what acupuncture does in a way that the patient can understand. They understand that they have symptoms. They understand that acupuncturists claim to be able to help them. They don't understand how putting the needle into the body will help them.
Instead of trying to teach patients theory, acupuncturists need to assure them that it works. When patients ask how it works, talking about Western antitherapeutics and science doesn't really know how it works, but many studies have shown it to be effective. To explain how it works, you may need to learn more about a completely different cultural medical paradigm. Most patients are happy to know that acupuncture is scientifically proven. If they want to know more, please remind patients that Western science may not know, but we don't always know bacteria. It requires advanced equipment to find them in the body and understand their role.
Patients often look for people who can communicate at their level. They want to know that they are spending money to buy something useful. They want to trust their acupuncturist. The best way to build trust is to communicate. Acupuncturists who want to build their own practices need to learn to communicate in the language of their patients rather than in the language of medication.
